Hi,

We have an error code P2196 - I am guessing the o2 sensor needs to be replaced on our r55

I am trying to locate it - i can see one on the exhaust at the bottom front of the engine - is this the correct sensor - if so any tips on how to replace it

thanks

upstream sensor is locking down at exhaust cat on front of engine to left of where the oil filter is,, will see the sensor poking out the heat shield,, if car has got more than 60-70k on it would be good idea to have timing chain checked for stretch, as common bi-product is 02 sensor fail
Thanks -

on real oem it says the length shoudk be 320mm - i have seen parts on ebay with the same refernece with a 240mm length
i assume I should go for the 320mm length /

How do I check the timing chain?

with the 02 sensors i would buy from a car parts shop rather than a price based item as the cheap ones dont last, believe me i have tried a number of times and each time they fail again not far down the road or some have failed from out of box,, will put a link below for genuine but not silly money from a good company

as for timing chain the best way is to remove the rocker cover and look down at rear of timing chain under the inlet sprocket and view the chain tensioner, brand new frist gen tenioners ie pre 2010 new have 5mm showing. at 10mm they start to cause issues, at 14mm its at the point where chain slips and bends valves ,
there is a way i use to do it with a camera on a thin cable and a laptop or smart phone link below for cheap option,, and i feed camera in the oil filler cap hole to rear of front of engine where the inlet sprocket lives and see how much is out of tensioer body,
the other way is with diagnostics,
the correct way is rocker cover off and install the special timing tools to lock it off and measure the throw on the tensioner
,02 sensor , you must give reg number before buying to be sure,

fwiw, this old thread may have useful info about the precat O2 sensor in addition to what mike1967 has advised.
