I have had my R56 Turbo since new in March '07. January build.
The car now has 60,000km. Performace and engine reliability has been perfect from day 1. Only engine concern was the 'rattley' start up!
The past few weeks though have seen a very annoying problem come and go!
First issues was a VERY rattley start one afternoon. Car performed fine for the afternoon and evening. The following morning, another severely rattley start and I soon found that i had los about 50% of power across the entire power range. Car sounded fine, but an obvious lack of power.
Off to the dealers and they seemed to rectify the prob with a 'reset' of the engine management computers.
The following day I learnt that car was now losing acceleration power from approx 4300RPM.
The prob comes and goes, Sometimes a turn off and back on of the car seems to work, other times the prob will come and go at ANY point in time!
It is a DEFINITE power loss! It takes approx 10secs in 3rd gear to get from 4300RPM to 6000RPM....this could NOT be a good thing?!?!?!

Has ANYBODY ever experineced a similar problem???

Dealership has had the car number of times and they have given varying replys. Most recent is that the car cuts out due to a knock sensor in the pistons and that it cannot be resolved!
That sounds a little drastic!!

Any ideas?????

if that cant be resolved they should put a new engine in it....my dad had a similar problem with a Mitsubiti Shogun a couple of years back and they put a brand spaking new engine in at a cost of just shy of £10,000 to mitsubiti!

have they looked at the turbo? see if the turbine thingies are okay?

This is just too bizarre... Like you're running on 3 out of 4 cylinders. Could it be a problem with the turbo inlet hose?

Nope, not a single damn warning light to be seen!

It does seem to be some boost related issue..

Car is in now getting diagnosed....they are having great difficulty finding the problem!!! GULP.

Annoying thing is, the prob comes and goes. At the dealer currently, she is running fine!

HI Michael

We both bought our cars around the same time. You took delivery a couple of months before mine.

Mate... it sounds like i may be encountering a similar kind of issue. When i put my foot down in 3rd gear at approx 2500rpm my car misfires.. well... that's it what it sounds like anyway. I lose torque and power. It is also intermittent. I have to call the dealership and book a time.

I know that it still isn't sorted and that he now waiting for the new timing chain assembly, with the hope that may be the problem.........Have lost count of how many times he has it there.........must be the the rain we get here in Aus  as no-one elsewhere has come accross this problem and the Brits have had the R56 a bit longer than us.........

I am reading this thread with interest.

I have also suffered problems with my R56 MCS, though on a much more infrequent basis. It started soon after the car was new (now 11 months old, 25,000 miles/40,000 km). I'm not sure it is the same problem though.

To describe my problem: it feels as though there is increased drag on the engine, and the car accelerates as though it has only 100bhp or so. It usually lasts a minute or so and disappears (no the handbrake has never been left on!) - no warning lights, and no warning codes registered on the ECU.

I have always suspected the turbo (I have suffered the melting bonnet scoop problem) though TDLC's suggestion of running on three cylinders is interesting.................

I am also suffering with this same problem!!!

The dealer yesterday changed the Turbo Boost Valve and the inlet manifold - hoping this would sort out the lack of power.

mine also suffered with engine knock "pinking" which meant the engine management set it to reduced power (No overboost). but first they said use good fuel - but now it maybe because there was a problem with the manifold.

it is still suffering lack of power now so will be taking it back today - but will keep you all posted

my cars timing chain broke on startup so i think maybe the repair didn't put the engine back very well

I think that I may have the same problem, my car is almost 2 years old 14k miles
It has only happened twice in the past 3 weeks but I experienced a huge loss in power while accelerating ( all gears )

No warning lights came on either time

The fiirst time it happened was a couple of days before it was booked in for a service, so I mentioned it to the dealer, they said it was the fuel pump and replaced it.

It happened again earlier this week, so dropped the car off this morning for the dearler to "plug it in" to their computer. Just waiting for them call to tell me its all fixed - lol - wont hold my breath!

I think it is a problem with the Turbo, however as it was running perfectly when I dropped it off so I doubt they will find anything.

Will let you know what they say

Stu

An update onbehalf of Michael!

Well.....it seems that GR8MNI may be on its way to MINI heaven! ;)

Well maybe not but I think Michael may wish it was there..........MINI has died! A phone call this morning came with a "I tried to start it and something broke".

The MINI recovery truck is on it's way and poorly sick MINI is going to hopefully be made well again!

No idea what is wrong with it though......but on a note re the turbo......had a look at the 207 site.....and guess what.......a common problem........with various "fixes" depending oh who you ask!

Well this is the link.....I would summerise.....but to be honest....I am still not sure what the fix could be!

207 GTi THP 175 Power Problem

It does seem to be anything from an ECU update to valve timing adjustments to ignition coils......well maybe someone with a little more knowledge than me can understand it! :hmph:

Sorry for the lack of posts on my own thread, but i have great difficulty accessing MINI2 from work for some reasson?!?!?
YES, the "GR8MNI" is currently a "SIKMNI"
A heart transplant is the only solution. A new engine is on its way from Germany.
I have been told litte about what is actually wrong with my engine.
I will keep you all posted on what I learn about my 'issues'.

I'm really interested in your Issues as mine has been in having the head de-carboned and the valves re-ground - to try and stop the problem.

it would be nice to know how your dealership managed to get a new engine out of MINI?

Hi people,
I used to own 2 pre R56 Coopers hence I am still a member on this site, I now have a Peugeot 207GTi and guess what, I have the same problem. The first thing you notice with the Pug is a warning message on the info screen saying 'depollution system is faulty' and a corresponding warning light with an engine icon appears on the dash. The car could run perfectly OK for a few days then the power loss occurs. The car has been in twice for repair, the first time they replaced the 'Purge canister' and the second time the Oxygen sensor, it would run fine for a few days and then the problem would come back, just as it has this weekend only this time no error message, just the power loss.
I toyed with thought of taking it to a Mini dealer to see if they could fix it but they appear to be just as clueless, as it seems to be a general (serious) design flaw..
Will keep you posted with my progress (or lack of..)

Just got mine back and its back to FULL POWER

they found the valves were coked up and checked PuMA which stated that if the engine was coked up to a certain point then it would need a new valve assembly cover which has been redesigned - however if it was limited to where mine was gunked up then it was simply a case of cleaning.

its done 30k

asked the service manager if it needed to be done ever again and he so hopefully not ;-)

Thanks for your update. I'm glad for you that you have got all power back under your right foot.

So, all this is due to bad design rather than use of inferior petrol? What strikes me is that the loss of power happened to people almost instantaneously, rather than over a short period of time. In that case I would not expect that the fault needed just a cleaning job as remedy.

Its Back Again!!!!!!!!!!!! D-oh!

ok so in December I reported back that the de-coked head and ground valves had sorted out the problem and that I was back to Warp Factor 9!

But now in February.........

It is now using 1.2litres of oil every 1000miles - which is every week as i'm a driving instructor.

its now started to judder when driving at around 2000rpm - so slightly different to before - but it does judder aswell on acceleration.

Dealership had it in for diagnostics and they believe that its the same problem as before - but have sent a PUMA report to BMW technical to see what they say.

i said before that i was told it may need the redesigned part -

but i'm looking for clarification off you guys as to how we heard about this new part?

any ideas where in the posts it says about it?

does anyone know the part number?

does anyone know the PUMA report about it?

i'm fed up with it now:angry:
