Hi guys,

I'm looking for some help with an Airbag Control Unit on my 2009/03 R57 Mini Cooper Convertible. The mechanic (indie) I have fixing an airbag light on fault has told me the Airbag control unit has an internal fault and needs to be replaced. However BMW want in excess of a thousand for the unit.

I have been trying to source a replacement unit, part number 65.77 3454345-01 or BMW-Nr 313454345011. This number is often stated on parts website as 65773454345.

So i have two questions.

1. If I source a unit with the exact same part number, will it work ok?

2. I'm having trouble sourcing the exact same part on the second hand market (due to being for a convertible). Is there any other control units that would be compatible with this part number or where I could find this information?

bmw-etk.info appears to show that there are up to 6 different control units fitted at various stages to this model, but does not indicate if they are backwards/forwards compatible.

Many thanks for any assistance in advance,

Jim

I had the exact same issue... I went on real oem website - found the part no for 3454345 - and found those interchangeable retrospectively.. - they are all for a convertible so harder to get hold of than an r56 part

I used a 65779807168 from a breaker that hadn't been crashed, fitted it (with the battery off) and when I reconnected battery and started the car the airbag light was now no longer on!

I got my part from LA Minis in Sheffield - who said there may be coding needed, but there wasn't.

Hope this helps

Peteg40,

Thank you so much for your reply. That gives me some hope! I did go to the real oem website and it lists the following parts for 65773454345 which ran from 12/01/2008 to 09/14/2010;

65779807168 (08/01/2010 — 08/09/2011) , Exchangeable retrospectively
65779808713 (07/01/2011 — 01/20/2012) , Exchangeable retrospectively
65779809353 (11/01/2011 — 06/13/2013) , Exchangeable retrospectively
65779811223 (11/01/2012 — 09/17/2013) , Exchangeable retrospectively
65779812296 (03/01/2013 — ) , Exchangeable retrospectively

Does that mean that any of these should work? I assumed it has to come from a car that the airbags haven't fired in?

If coding is required, does that mean it has to be done by main dealer?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm just not very up on these cars.

Thanks,

Jim

all those should work yes (I believe)

and coding - either by main dealer - or a specialist - if it needs it, mine didn't
will need diagnostics to reset the memory or stored fault codes ie autocom will do it, rule of thumb is try and buy same model same age secondhand one,

Mike & Pete,

Thank you so much for your replies. It really does help. The fact its a convertible is making my search difficult as well as most breakers are crashed/flooded.

One query; Is it correct that if the airbags are out/fired in the donor car then the Airbag module wouldn't be any good or is it the case that it would just require a fault to be cleared via diagnostics? I'm currently looking at a car where only the side airbags on both seats are deployed and am unsure if this would work for me.

Thanks very much for all the help,

Jim

Hi again,

Well finally I'm getting somewhere. Just sourced a 65779807168 non-crashed so hoping I have similar luck to you Peteg40. It is from a diesel R57 however but if it requires coding then so be it.

Is NCS Expert capable of coding this module if necessary?

I'll update how it goes,

Thanks again

those abs pumps fail on the soldering on the valves, by removing the plastic cover its possible to repair them sometimes if do remember to reseal them back together form water, i have repaired more than not over the years by this approach,

Hi all,

although it is an old thread I don't want to open a new one as my question fits more or less good. My car is German R56 Mini one.

I had also internal fault and I do not have eeprom programmer here(the internal fault can be solved by repairing dump in eeprom) .

But a new replacement ECU is not so expensive so I have bought one. Installed, programmed with winkfp, coded, delated faults and read them again. Fault memory indicated that the airbag sensor in B- Pillar is faulty, in both x-y directions and both sides(driver passanger). Although the probability that both sensors are faulty was for me 0,00000001, I have bought another one sensor. As expected the fault remained. Than I have tried another airbag sensor from bmw e87, airbag modul detected that this one is wrong one for this ecu, so the wiring is ok( I have checked them though).

So I have tried the replacement unit in another mini one, same fault with airbag sensors in B- Pillar. This brought me to conclusion, that the used "new" ecu is faulty and at the same time I started to consider the part number. I have bought one which is interchangable with my one:

My one: 65773454346
New(second) used one: 65773451779

As soon as ECU arrived, tried to install it in the same way as mentioned before. Same fault with B- Pillar sensors. So i have brought another one ECU which is working for 100% from another mini one r56, same fault with b pillar sensors.

And from now I am really desperate. I have tried to start system-time but this is not possible in r56.

Anybody any idea? Only what I can suggest is that every ECU has its own Satellites-Types or maybe only Part- Numbers. But why than the interchangeble Part number is not working ?

Should I buy exactly the same ECU? Or I am something missing...

Thanks a lot in advance.

Best Regards,

Val
