What sort of paint would people recommend? And how much paint would I need to paint front and back?

Smoothrite 500ml RED (Hammerite Smooth )Paint £9.99

Or would a spray be better?

there seem to be plenty of threads on this if you poke around; I've even bought a can of smooth red Hammerite etc. and plan to do this 'one day' (would need to bring the car into the office, though, as I don't have a heated garage at home).

In short, the consensus seems to be that, once the wheels are off, the callipers can be cleaned with a wire brush, perhaps with some cleaning fluid if very dirty; two or three thin layers of paint (with a small brush), with some drying time in between will get the results.

But of course, 'one day' hasn't arrived yet, so I can only summarise what I've read elsewhere in the forum. I don't think sprays are recommended, as the masking up can be an issue.

But I'll be sure to post my pics in due course, or 'some day'.
