Recommended engine oils

I have a 2016 Hardtop 2-door Mini Cooper and was getting ready to change the oil when I noticed that the manual says I should use BMW Longlife engine oil.

Do people actually use BMW oil in their Minis? Where can it be purchased?

Would it be a huge mistake to use more common oil that can be picked up at one of the auto parts chains? I was planning to use Valvoline Full Synthetic Advanced SAE 0W-20, which meets API SP requirements.

Any recommended oil filters? I purchased one that claims to only last 5,000 miles, so I guess I'll be changing the oil again then instead of at the recommended interval of 10,000 miles.

The oil is available from Vauxhall dealers in the UK ...Its states its BMW on the lable,same oil as used in various Vauxhall cars like my own 2 litre turbo..20 litres for £46 on a trade club basis..Im not trade btw just asked and was given...As for the filter buy the best you can afford.

Thanks for the advice. I'm in the US and I don't believe we have Vauxhall here. I'm guessing I can get it at a BMW dealership.

Pretty sure BMW specs Castrol full synthetic in most of their vehicles but here’s a link that may help: (oils required for the mini) Excluding the F56.

TBH I thought some Vauxhalls were sold under the GM banner. However the oil I referenced is BMW specific too..If you'd like a picture of the label ...My R56 does have a Castrol oil recommended on a sicker too.
That would depend on where you live in the country. whenever you do buy oil though it a good practice to look at the API service rating:

Under the red arrow is the service rating these is a code for the additives that they are putting in the oil. The Additives that the manufacturers counted on when building the engine. SL is represented as date in time more than anything. The Point is if the manufacturer assigned R as the API service rating than this oil in the picture would be O.K. Because the Letter S comes after R. Never revert back to another oil before the letter R, for example.
The Yellow Arrow shows the type of oil weight and Viscosity. It is best to follow manufacturers recommendation on that. And as in your situation it appears that they do offer 0W30,0W20 which should be the standard oil you use. If you live in a extreme hot environment you can use 5W30. You can fudge a little in that respect.
it would come down to what your owners manual recommends.
As long as the oil has a API doughnut type badging on the back of it or somewhere on the bottle, and it coincides or is newer than the manufacturer rating than you can use whatever oil you want to use.

personally i would do away with longlife oil and change oil every 12 months or 8000 miles which comes sooner,, all this longlife rubbish is a engine killer in long term,, was more designed by makers to save money for pcm and lease companys who rent out cars for 3 years then buy a new fleet every 3 years,, dirty old oil kills these cars on many level ,, as for buying a bmw own brand and bare in mind its not in their interest for any of there cars to last must past the warranty on any level as after that point its all repairs coming back to them so cheap but expansive to buy oil in baulk is good for them thats my theory to it all,, after seeing what happens to these engines with ling life oil and 20k before a change,,

I use fully synthetic 5W40 in my 2013 R56 JCW. I change it every 12months/5000miles. When looking inside the oil filler cap at the camshafts, they look like new! No deposits or sludge build up. Not even any discolouration!
Everything looks all 'silvery' and new! :) (y)

the 5 figure is the hot number at 100c the 40w is at 0 degrees so when oil is cold its thinker and when gets to 100c its 5,, trouble is these engines runs at 105c ie 5% over what oils are graded at, most engine wear happens at cold first start up so the thick oil does recuse blow past i would think might take oil pump a fraction longer to push oil around at full volume but always is higher pressure ,,, as cold oil is thicker and more dense until heats up,,
5k oil changes are by far best war forward and keeping oil level on the full mark nearly all the time,, and not do what some do drive until red oil can light comes on dash then drive to garage and put some oil it and then be all fed up that they need a new engine as when that lights comes on damage has been done,,
i done a rebuild on a r32 a while a go and after all rebuilt told the owner it will use more oil for 1000 miles i would say prob less ie little more than what vag say 1 litre to 800 miles is normal and he needs to check oil every day get a understanding on it all,,, after 1300 miles he sends me a video of the engine bay and its tapping and rattling not sounding right etc,, bare in mind on phone i asked him have you been checking oil regular he would answer the question directly,, so i got car recovered back to my mine ,, and the very first thing i do before moving any car i dont own if check for oil and water... the oil was so low was not even on the dip stick (prob on the dipstick who owned the car lol) so i videoed it sent it back to him he was so sorry etc ,,,,, i dropped the oil in to clean container and let settle and then look at the bottom of container for white metal,, lucky boy was clean i filled it back with new oil and filter,, put vag come on it all 6 cylinders were equal on fueling and zero knock and smooth running all good,... some people are just place stupid when it comes to the very basics check oil and water every 300 miles max weekly or even daily on one that uses ,more oil ie like most mini's do,,, that guy spent close to 4k on that engine with forge work etc and to lazy to check the fluids,,
what i feel was him pointing fingers at me in first place that his engine was all wrong and all my fault etc ,, i drove his car around for 3 days to make sure it was all good and never needed any oil in that time and went so well,, i even stuck it on mot emissions tester and all levels came back super low hc was 9 ie a tall tail hint of oil burning is high hc..
my point here to anyone reading it we all buy used cars that we have no understanding of whether the past owners were lazy car killers that pass on their damaged cars to next owner,,,

I'm not seeing anywhere in the manual where they specify anything beyond the BMW longlife standards, other than to say that up to one quart of API SL can be added if BMW oil isn't available. The oils I have are API SN & API SP.

Yeah, sorry about that. I’ve used ECS Tuning before for BMW and Mini items if you want to have an oil change kit delivered to your door, but lots of options out there. Build Your Own F56 F55 F54 F57 F60 MINI Cooper Oil Change And Filter Kit 2.0L (2014+)
