I think its pretty safe to say that what your planning to do is OK, as its a very minor change, & although strictly speaking its Not following the Letter of the Law, (Pun Intended), it would be a suprise if you were to stopped for it.
I`ve seen Spacings & Bending of Letters you would trouble Reading, & basically, theres far more important matters for the Police to concern themselves with

Where does one group start and one finish? On a number of the form A123BCD is the A group on its own? I can't find and answer, so I don't think the police will know either.
The police want it to be readable. A 123 BCD is just as readable as A123 BCD.

But I agree that the Police will more than likely turn a blind eye to minor misplacing as long as the letters are legible
