Copied fromthe DVLA website:

THE LAW
The law states that,

You must not alter, rearrange or misrepresent the letters or numbers
Characters must not be moved from one group to the other (e.g. A242 ABC must not be displayed as A242A BC).
Offences may result in any or all of the following:

A fine of up to £1,000
The registration mark may be WITHDRAWN
The vehicle may FAIL the MOT test
Where does one group start and one finish? On a number of the form A123BCD is the A group on its own? I can't find and answer, so I don't think the police will know either.

The police want it to be readable. A 123 BCD is just as readable as A123 BCD.

BTW, the penalty doesn't include licence endorsements.

The Police WILL know
The requirements of UK Registration Plate display can be found Here >>

But I agree that the Police will more than likely turn a blind eye to minor misplacing as long as the letters are legible
;)

My plate is S17 RYN, which I got made in a normal font, but I had the 1 and 7 moved closer together with a screw between to represent an A, and it looks reasonably normal.
Like others have said, if you stick to a normal font, and its easily readable, the cops dont really care that much, but they do when you have fine italic letters like I used to have!

PS, the S and A are my initials, my surname is RYAN, its nothing to do with SARYN!

Aren't you contradicting yourself? If you move the 1 and 7 nearer together to make them look like an A it's not going to be easily readable as the designated registration mark.
