Only way to make it work is to get one on eBay (BMW part) and then wire in the resistor and capacitor. Then it works very well.
Alternatively there are a couple of Bluetooth options on eBay that use the CD changer cradle. They also work well.
I've done both and settled on the £50 Bluetooth adapter as it gives more flexibility and does hands free calling.
