Hey there, just had an F55 here at my shop with the same issue. Remove the shift lever assembly, the whole thing, not just the lever.
Carefully open it up. Inside there is a white lever that has a magnet on the back side of it (rear most) and the shift interlock solenoid pushes this lever.
On the one here, we removed that while lever and found the spring broken so that interlock lever's magnet was no longer in range of the sensor. We unwound the spring to get the length we needed and it works.
Hope it helps
Troy

Hi! I just got my gear shift selector replaced but the message still pops up. So I’m guessing spring is the problem for me as well. How do I get to the spring? My mechanic does not know anything about mini and this is really frustrating

As the spring is inside the gear selector assembly, if you had your entire gear shift selector replaced, then the spring should not be the problem. I disassembled mine so as to avoid having to buy a new one. In my case, it was the spring. I wrote about it in a previous post.
This is really frustrating:( so that spring is within the gear selector shift? Damn then idk what’s the issue with my car... dealer is charging me $190 for diagnosis. So I went to car shop I know and told him to replace the gear shift which cost me $500 with labor. But the sign still comes up 😞

Sorry to bother you but when you open up the assembly, what do you do with the broken wire cable? You unwound it and do you need to connect to specific place?

Hello! Can you name/code the spring? I'm trying to buy, but I cannot find it.
Hey I don’t know the part number but I ended up fixing it myself with my friend. I watched this video and it helped. It was that small damn spring inside the gear shift box 😡. Took me around 5 hours. Make sure to detach the battery if you are going to fix it yourself. I ended up trading in my mini few weeks ago. Lol
Good luck!
