I am wondering if anybody has any idea about this error message on My car ( European F56 MINI Cooper 2-door hardtop built on 07/15/2015 with the B38 engine).
Currently, every time I put the car in P and switch the car off and open my door, I get a warning message Secure vehicle against rolling. I chick the car with a diagnostic tool, which won't clear the error.

The error says "Shiftlock solenoid selector lever wrongly not locked in P intermittent ” code 420106.

One of the forum members had the same problem and I asked him but I could not get any answer from him but he said the company told him he should go for a new control unit at £958+VAT to replace it.*( what does he mean by new control unit )?

Hey I don’t know the part number but I ended up fixing it myself with my friend. I watched this video and it helped. It was that small damn spring inside the gear shift box 😡. Took me around 5 hours. Make sure to detach the battery if you are going to fix it yourself. I ended up trading in my mini few weeks ago. Lol
Good luck!
Thank you for the help!!!! 🥰
yes, you remove the center plastic, then you can undo the shifter from where it is in the car and with some patience get it done.
Thank you Thank you! I have the SAME problem in Italy...BMW wants € 700,00 + hours...insane....I have forwarded the Link with your explanations to my mechanic. Thank you again!

I bought the outrageously price spring from eBay, but it worked perfectly. 3.5 hrs mostly on trim fiddling. No coding required, the error just went away after re-assembly.

Hmm... this sounds like it's going to be a fun exercise.

@BadWedge Could you link us to the spring?

Hi, did you solve the problem? I'm also in Italy and have the same. Did somebody took the exact dimensions (inner diam, outer diam, angle, number of loops, handedness...) so one can find a replacement? Thank you

Someone in the comments of the video said they used the spring from a clothes pin. I can't decide if I want to risk doing this myself. :) Maybe I'll wait until my husband goes out of town. He hates it when I take things apart.
I joined this forum just to add a link for the pin itself. I have no room to work on my car, so I'd rather pay my mechanic (a good guy) for his labor than shell out ~$550 for an entire shifter assembly that is otherwise working perfectly. Sure, this spring is probably just as thin and will break again in a few years (our mini is a 2016 w/ just over 42k miles), but you all sent me in the right direction with videos and information (so I'll know how to change it myself when I live somewhere with a garage/driveway), so if I can help you out and save you money, that's good enough for me.

Hi Folks, I have the same fault code on my 65 plate Mini One Automatic, I replaced the spring, still got the fault, bought a new selector, fitted it, still got the fault..... Does anyone have any suggestions??
Okay. Finally getting back to this. When did I first post - a year ago. Well, I guess that a "Secure Vehicle From Rolling" message wasn't enough to make me hurry. Anywho...

Finally did it. Let me thank everyone here and elsewhere for helping. I couldn't have done it this easily without all the participation in the string.

So here's what I got.
  • Model F55 - 2016 Cooper S 4 door
  • I bought the spring on Ebay. Between the good packaging, and the helpful diagram and that it definitely feels like an upgrade... I have no regrets in paying $25 for it.
  • Followed instruction here for the sping itself.
  • Followed this step by step for getting the shifter out (it's f56 instead of f55) but everything was the same. step by step Stop when they start taking the shifter apart in the car. You want to take the whole thing out and bench disassemble it.
My notes for anyone following in the footsteps.
  • In the disassembly, it says to pull the shift knob before seperating the shift boot and disconnecting the wires. I say reverse those steps. When I pulled the shift knob it came flying off and pulled the boot and yanked the wiring connectors apart. I was lucky nothing was broken. But if you disconnect the 2 wiring connections first, then you have nothing to fear.
  • Pay attention disassembling the shifter. Most so on the park release button connected to the 2 red wires. It was tough to figure out how that went back together.
  • And have fun and enjoy the silence when you shut down and it's not beeping at you!

I have the same error code in my 2015 with F55 engine and 25K miles on vehicle. Dealer wants $1600 to repair. Car runs fine. What is the downside of not repairing? Can't you simply apply hand brake to prevent car from rolling while parked?

If it's the little spring sensor problem causing it, then it's really mechanically in park anyway. Will it roll on a grad when in park? I'm betting it wont. It's just an annoying error message. Won't look good for you when going to sell it. But otherwise no.
Here is a video showing the procedure in a MINI.
I was able to fix this problem myself in about 3 hours using 2 videos posted on YouTube. I purchased a new spring on eBay for $12. The first video covers removing the interior console parts to access and remove the shifter. The video from the previous post covers opening up the shifter unit itself and replacing the spring. The process is tedious but can be done, just follow the videos and take your time.
