Sliding around

I'm getting tired of sliding around on the greasy roads, today I was caught by a Transit van.
I was going pathetically slow and still nearly went off in a few bends. Twice I lost all grip with all 4 tyres.
Is getting a set of 15" with decent tyres going to help much, I never had this problem with my Cooper and the 15" Dunlops.
I'm running part worn Goodyear runflats on standard 16's and they are going to kill me.

The other day I was going up a slight hill and about 45MPH (past a speed camera) I was in 4th and I accelerated once I was past the evil yellow box. The bloomin traction control thingy cut in. I mean uphill, 50ish in 4th and I'm wheel spinning?

I'm praying for a few days of heavy rain to clean up the roads, but I can't wait much longer, this is an excuse my wife will accept for me getting some 15's ;)

Yeh same with me this week iv noticed alot of wheel spin I think its because we are getting light rain over here or something its not washing the stuff away.
i was caught out 2day in my old mans car (320D). had been to collect it from the bodyshop after someone had bumped it the other day, comin round a corner quite slow in 2nd whilst still in the industrial estate i put my foot down and when the turbo kicked in (bare in mind this is a turbo diesel so nothin too powerful) the back end was away, i got a shock as i wasnt expectin it!! just kept the foot in tho to let the dsc sort it out.

would have looked quite good aslong as people didnt see the 'oh ****' look on my face!!

to be honest i'm sure theres not much tyres can do when the roads are in the state there in at the mo. mine are fairly decent (7k) and my dads have only got 2k on them and both arent much fun when your pushin on a bit.
I don't think going to 15s will matter. Just get some decent 16s.
But I want a set of 15's. :(

However, suggestions for good 16's?

'Evil' Runflats don't help the course either. Go to the tyre section to see the general consensus on them. If they are part worn also won't help. Get yourself some proper tyres, when Ihad runflats, you knew they were part worn when they started to tram line. Nasty.
The 5.5"x15" wheels will make a BIG difference over the 6.5"x16" wheels. I have both. The first storm of the first winter that I had my MCS I found out how bad the 16" runflat Dunlops were. I was on the internet that night researching various solutions.

After installing the 15" wheels it made all the difference. For rain, snow or sleety conditions the narrower tire gives superior traction. Just check out WRC cars for proof positive.
Thank you Bilbo, I was hoping to hear from someone who had both.

I have long wanted to try my MCS on a set of 15's, basic physics says they should be better in low grip situations and indeed across the board.
I know that there are certain corners where my Cooper would beat my MCS.

Now all I need to know is what tyres are you using on the 15's and has anyone out there got a set of 15's for sale?

Update. Update.
It's peeing down outside, the roads should be nice and clean again real soon, and despite all their failing, my Goodyear runflats are damn good in very wet conditions.
Still gonna get some new boots though! :D
i know what you mean about minis and greecy roads.... i wrote my car off yesterday and almost killed my slef,!! these coopers aint great on greecy roads!!
If even slightly damp, my run falts are rubbish. In the dry they're OK but def not replacing them with the same once they've worn!

Mr Cornflakes has some 15" rubber on steelies, brand new x 4 , ask him they are MINI2 charity donations so you can make a donation and get some new wheels and rubber too:)
Road closed due to slippery surface

It's not just us having problems then.
I've been told the film is the road salt keeping the water in on the road and lowering adhesion. It depends what type of salt but it can keep water down for days! That's why when you wash your car and go out for a drive in the sunshine, you still get eveil gray road muck on the windscreen and bodywork

Horgy
That sounds right.
Thursday it rained in the early morning, finished about 10:00am, the roads had dried out by 4 in the afternoon.
Whereas they hadn't dried out for the previous 3 weeks with no rain.

I took full advantage of the dry conditions and hammered the poor little red b****r all the way home.
Glad i found this thread :) I thought it was just my bad driving - slidding all over the place :D
me too shedend. im all over the place at the moment. feels like ice.

hope u are ok L13cooper
Wots going on?

I entered one of my favourite roundabouts yesterday and was beaten out of it by a Nissan Crappia DCX diesel rep mobile! I lost all front end grip into the roundabout and then all lateral grip as I tried to go round it. Wouldn't mind, but I had to come to a full stop before entering the thing to let a very nippy M3 go past, so wasn't as though I was doing much more than 30 in a de-restricted motorway run off!

either the water we get in rain is more slippy or the rubber in our RFs is sh*te at biting in the mildly damp. either way - we should be told
