Hi all

I noticed my BMW Dooper (2011, 1.6, 95k miles) smoking when I parked up yesterday. The fan remained on after stopping, blowing smoke out of the rear of the engine bay.

I opened the bonnet, removed the engine cover, and had a look. Oily smoke is coming from the rear the the turbo. It's hard to see exactly where due to the heat shielding.

A mechanically minded friend looked in the engine bay (from a safe distance!) and suggested that a pipe or seal around the turbo could be leaking under pressure.

Anyone have experience of this problem? What kind of job is replacing those pipes/seals?

Thanks - IzzyDooper

What a can of worms... let me tell you what a Mini/BMW Specialist told me:

Timing chain - needs replacing. OMG. This is an engine-out repair.

Turbo gasket - a small failure on a gasket, easily replaced, as the engine is out.

Oil leak - oil was pooling at the bottom of the engine. When the radiator fan came on, it was blowing small droplets of oil all over the place, some of which ended up on hot surfaces. Hence the smoke. The failure point is replaced as part of the timing chain fix.

When the timing chain was being fixed, the clutch and flywheel, while not failing, would need doing within 18 to 24 months. Do it now to save labour later? (It involves disassembling the gearbox, which is a labour intensive fix.)

Guess how much that has cost me!?

funny just been speaking to someone on here about same engine below link worth a look, yep your right its disgraceful and even more so the fact they will not fix their mess on any of these cars out of their warranty,, deffo stopped me from ever buying one ever again was a for years until i bought a brand new 3 series 320dm sport in 2007 by 2009 late was snapped chain under 70k , bmw told me to jog on blamed every thing form the tides to the day of the week to i must of been wearing a blue shirt on that day,,, deffo never a sorry sir its a known fault let us do the right thing,, over the years i have meet a lot of people they done same thing to, vag group cars are the same almost like these german companies agreed to make just as bad faults in their cars so keep fouling people that they are prestige and the best on the road,,, its a bad thing when Peugeot Citroen are equals on reliability these days but then they do share engine with bmw until 2018 cooper s has bmw b-series engines time will tel on those,,, honda is what i never see broken much, honda they had a issue with the 1.8vtec engines 2006 to 2010 the alloy catings on engine blocks were made wrong and went porous leaked coolant,,, honda recalled 1 million cars and paid for new engines as long as car was under 8 years and 100,000 miles,, also they had clutch issues with 2.2cdti diesel they resigned them to 325 fitted the issues, same as timing chain issues on early cars they fixed this by 2007,, hats off to honda and shame on other car makers who rip us all off
