Soaked!

2709 Views 18 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  sarahloo
Yesterday I had to drive to work and park in an outside lot. Around lunch time it started to rain. And I am not talking about sprinkles, it was a monson! By the time I got out of work at 5pm my convertible top was SOAKED. But just the top. Inside it was dry. Water didn't soak thru the whole roof. Now safe in my garage I am letting it dry, and scared it will be like a wool sweater in the dryer.

Anyone else have this happen? An problems? Or did it just dry and keep going?

Get yourself some 303 High Tech Fabric Guard. This will prevent your top from getting soaked. Great stuff.

You ought to try owning a convertible in Great Britain! Mine quite often goes into the garage wet (the garage is quite well aired) and has spent all of the winter on the roads with the roof up / down / wet / dry / oven (resprayed bonnet). No problems.

The materials, I've been told, are the same they use for the BMW 3 Series convertible. I'm sure they're weather resistant.

As Goatherder said, it's worth getting fabric protection sprays and giving the hood a thorough clean occasionally. Bought mine in September, got some Autoglym hood treatment and will be doing it the next dry weekend.

If it does shrink, let me know!

My MCSC since Nivember has been through torrential rains soaking the hood, 18 inches of snow ON the roof, rainstorms followed by freezing temperatures (-9 Fahrenheit or-25 Celsius) which turn the top into a giant ice sheet. Upand down wet and dry and also down at 5 degrees fahrenheit for a wonderful drive to work one morning with hoar frost all over the roof before it went down.
Don't worry about your roof - it is designed an built to take anything. If it was only designed to be under cover indie a building then it wouldn't be a car it would be a SCULPTURE!
totally confused by this thread?

its a car, its a roof, its bound to get wet and soaked:confused:

Garage, whats one of those?:p

This is very good advice. There are other similar products on the market.

Seal it with a "great" product though...

Scotchguard is also considered to be very useful in this regard...
Hello,

If this is any help...
I currently have a 99 bmw m3 vert.(waiting for my baby now) Original roof, it's in great shape. I've not done anything to it in almost 2 years and although it looks like it's soaked (always has) when it gets wet, it no big deal. I also just wash with soap and water to get the road grime off.

Have a great day!

i bought an auto glymn roof cleaning kit for twenty pounds and i am really impressed with the results i got from it. I know it wont necessarily protect the roof but it really does look like new now.
I am new to mini2 and not yet got my MCSC but wanted to know what to use to protect the hood. Anyone got a definite ones not to use or any recommendations?
protect the hood?? its already protected and you have a warranty;)
hi all

i am a new member & also hopefully a new mini convertible owner, i have owned a 52 plate mini before but never a convertible. we dont have a garage at all so our mini will be open to all weathers, will the hood be ok???

many thanks

I think the decision to sell anything with a soft-top in the UK, and especially in Northern Ireland, was one taken bearing the terrible weather in mind.

Whilst it will be fine getting rained over, it is a good idea to get some product to protect it, particularly if you're an anxious owner, as if it were your child (I know I am).

And I think any good quality protector will do, seeing as the tops will already be manufactured with weather resilience in mind.
I had a 05 Convertible and now a 07 Convertible. Both left outside with no problems at all.

I buy some specialist fabric roof cleaner every Spring and give the roof a thorough going over after the Winter -then reproof.

I never lower the roof when it is wet or damp.
thank you, sounds like it will be ok - just got to get myself my mini now
