Spec Differences UK vs USA

Does anyone know the detailed differences between Mini 2's that are to be delivered within the UK and those being sent to the USA? It looks like the USA model has some items standard that are options in the UK. Are there options that you can't get in the US? How about options you can't get in the UK?

What about country required differences, such as lighting, ride hight, motor specs, smog stuff, air bags, etc?

A thread has been started on Cooper S Spec and Pricing Comparison. All the information is not available, but you can subscribe to the thread to be notified of updates.

A few things available in other markets but not in the US:
  • Seats with leather bolsters and cloth seating surfaces
  • 16" 5-star alloys on the 'S'
  • On-board computer as a separate option
cloth/leather seats

Ummmm...How come the US brochure lists the cloth seats as available for a Cooper S then?????

Because they're all cloth ... no leather bolsters.

US has side running lights integrated into the side of the bumpers, no fog light (redundant bulb) as integrated into the tail lights, different ECU software monitoring the emissions more stringently and slightly different fuel system to minimise fuel vapour emissions yet further.

Oh! Well that's fine by me! As long as I can get cloth on the Sports seats..

Hiya InsiderMINI,

Is it just the US spec cars that have these side running lights, or do all LHD cars come fitted with these??

I only ask cos i saw a LHD cooper the other day in sheffield (UK) and it had side running lights. I just thought it was a european model, never occured that it might be a US spec car!!:) :)

The sidemarker lights you mention have been required for all cars sold in the US market since 1968. Because the US and Canadian markets are so intertwined, Canadian regulations are nearly identical to the US ones, so they require sidemarker lights too.

AFAIK, no other countries have these same requirements.

BTW, Have you ever seen what a Canadian market classic Mini of the 1970's looked like (long after Minis were no longer being sold in the US)? They came from the factory with sidemarker lights and huge bumpers :( :

Rear Fog Lamps

Insider - any idea if it will be relatively easy to fit the rear fog lamp bulb(s) to a US-spec MINI ?? Would it just be a matter of fitting the bulb, and fitting the appropriate toggle switch in the console facia ??

I'm very interesting in doing this to, but I was thinking that on North American MINIs the 'spare' bulb socket used for the foglamp in other markets may be wired as a supplemental taillight/brake light -- meaning both the top and bottom of the taillight assembly (surrounding the amber indicator lens) will serve the same function? Has anyone seen a US-spec MINI with the brake lights or taillights on?
