I have a 2009 Mini Cooper (automatic) and just replaced the battery in December. I tried starting the engine today and as soon as I pressed the button the car went dead: all the lights on board were off, no buttons worked, the key fob was stuck inside. I tried everything I could think of (moving the gear shifter, the steering wheel etc). After a couple of minutes the lights came back on, I took the key out and thought it was just a fluke. So I tried again and the same thing happened, car went dead. I waited, this time lights came back on after 15 minutes so I tried starting the engine again and for the third time all the power went off. This time lights and radio came back on after an hour so I didn't want to try again for a 4th time. Took the key out, locked the car and I am trying to find a solution online. I don't think it's the battery since it is essentially new, but what else can it be? The key is a little old and worn should I try the replacement 2nd key which is brand new?

Thank you both for your replies.
I looked at the battery and to me it looks ok, connections are not loose and they don't look corroded. I took a pic to see what I mean. I also tried charging the second key fob that I have but putting it in the contact slot and leaving it there for a couple of hours but no success, the second key is dead, I can't open/lock doors remotely so it either has no battery in or it is dead. The main key that i have been using for the pat 10 years works when I try locking or unlocking the doors but I don't want to try to start up the engine again.
I will try to replace the key fob battery next and will update this thread in a week or so.

Update: I tried starting up the car again this evening and it started as if nothing is wrong. I took the opportunity to drive it to AutoZone and have the car battery checked. It is at 100% charge and the guy looked at connections and said everything looked good.

So it seems more and more probably that the car key is faulty or needs a new battery. Will get a battery and either replace it myself or have a shop do it if they charge a reasonable fee.
