Sunroof part of convertible fault

Hi all,

New here. I've had a search through all the threads for roof issues on a convertible but most seem to have issues with the main part of the roof and not the sunroof part. Mine is the opposite. When I hold the button to open it, it will start to go back but stops every few inches, you have to release the button and go again 4 times to get it all the way open. Once it's there, the main part of the roof will open/close with ease but the sunroof will struggle to close again.

Any ideas on what this needs to fix it before I have to stick it into the dealer?

No solution here. I did speak to one of the service managers at the dealership. He said it might be a battery issue since the car is not driven regularly. I had the battery tested and was told it needed charged. I put a trickle charger on it for several days. Still does the same thing.

Thanks for responding. I think they were probably just guessing. Id say low battey charge would cause the roof to stall rather than move in stages. I think this is perhaps a safety mode, after it has sensed an obstruction or jammed previously. This happens on some cars with the electric windows, and there is normally a way to reset it. I cant figure out how to reset it though.... ive tried reseting the roof by disconnecting the battery and various combinations of holding the roof switch, central locking switch, but been able to resolve. My Mrs has rung a mini specialist and they said possibly a sensor fault or the motor system sensing an overcurrent. Could be the motor sensing an overcurrent?

i will keep investigating and report back.
Having said that, i did “assist” the roof whilst it was in motion by pushing on it and no difference. So i dont think it’s an overcurrent.
When closing the sunroof portion do the windows also stop closing when the sunroof stops.
Thx

I have the same problem....I have replaced the CVM and the trunk sensor to no avail...someone just told me that it could be the plastic cogs on the motor behind the plastic on your roof...don't know how to take off the plastic as one picture I looked at said you have to break off the retainers and that breaks a $200 plastic part...not going there yet...Dan
Hi everyone, My wifes car has exactly the same problem. Very frustrating. Did anyone manage to find a solution? Thank you

It has been too cold to work on my mini closure problem...I have taken the plastic center piece of the roof off but haven't dropped the motor yet to see if the "cogs" are the problem...I'll let you know if that fixes it...Dan
FIXED! So I saw on Facebook group that someone was having the same issues. They told me to ‘reset the windows’

With the engine running, put down the drivers window but hold the switch down for 20 seconds. Then do the same for the passenger side, then do the same for the rear windows. This should then ‘reset’ the window position. I assume that this is then linked to the roof mechanism in the point that once the windows are ‘reset’, the roof sensors then ‘know where the windows are’

after this reset, the roof/sunroof then worked normally!!!

hopefully it works for you guys too
