If you need the towing capacity and/or do long distance diesel would be the right choice for you but I don't know if BMW/MINI have a newer diesel engine as mike1967 has mentioned.
If you don't require heavy towing and/or do less than 15K miles per year maybe consider the BMW/MINI 2.0l petrol engines as these have less problems than previous gens engines. Although still relatively new ~2017 they were introduced into the countryman, I think.
