Traction Control Light - What tool can I diagnose with?

1839 Views 8 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  mike1967
Hello all,

I have a 2002 R53 Cooper S and the traction control light is constantly on. There is no difference in performance or traction what so ever and it isn’t affecting the drive either which has me a little confused.

I’m wanting to diagnose it with a tool but I needn’t some help picking the right diagnose tool please, there are a few on eBay and Amazon etc but im wondering what you guy on here recommend?

Some only check engine faults which I guess is pointless in this situation, but would be useful if the tool also did check other faults aswell as the traction faults for any further issues.

Look forward to hear from you.

Thanks.

(FYI: before posting I searched high and low for a Ismaili topic and wasn’t successful)

Could it be the MAF sensor rather than the Wheel speed sensor... the reason I say this is that the ABS or EML do not come on just the traction control light constantly on?

Any help or experience would be great guys.

Thanks.

you will need a p-code scanner ie factory code reader, the cheapest best value for near full function and ease of use,
1, autocom cdp plus
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2018-TCS...479779?hash=item44279e92a3:g:TrcAAOSwUgdbfiTR
2. wow wurth snooper AA use this software
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/For-WOW-...=32366211834292ad22a02930462bbc791ee785a8da4f
the autocom has the best live data function by far, but the snooper has data info and also does a one click fault search for all controllers thats handy,, in perfect world buy both mount them both on same laptop. covers any car on the road up to 2016 a must have bit of kit for diy and can encode injectors and reset dpf filters and service resets etc even use then for electronic handbrakes for pads replace and reset
as for your fault the abs sensors are all part of traction control and worth together need to read it see whats failed, common for the abs sensor or its counter ring rusted away on older cars

Thank you very much for the reply.

Will these also read engine fault codes? doesn't say it in either description.

I was looking at getting this, how would it compare to the ones you are suggesting?

eBay item number:322744061765 Autel Autolink AL619 (I cant post links as i haven't posted enough on the forum yet.)

I do have a very basic code reader from Autel but it is actually coming back with no error codes.

Thanks.

depends what you want, ie if just want a very very basic scan tool to stick in glove box that to be honest dont cover enough to be much more help than a vague idea of a code, then your autel would fit the bill.
if you want what professional garages use with full function covers all controllers on a read and write level including in depth live data runs when needed then the two links are the best fo the money and secondhand to none at that price,, autel do a full function machine things its around £400,, trouble with faults on cars just having the fault code dont means you have found the fault just means more searching with live data etc to find out why,, ie a 02 sensors faulty reading does not mean the sensor is faulty it prob doing its job and telling you of a different issue like faulty injector or timing chain or cat dead etc, there is nothing else on the market for that kind of money that covers so much and you could more likely end up non the wiser and have just wasted some money on it. ask the forum form others that have bought these and you should get the picture

thats because autel for that money dont touch P-codes dealer only the two scanners i listed do and much more
Thanks again Mike.

I think I might go for the wow wurth snooper as you've state it has an easier fault code collection, I'm not massively familiar with autoelectrics so wouldn't 100% know what I'm doing if it wasn't user friendly. I think for £30 its well worth the punt!...

Just need to try and get a laptop with windows 7 now :/

i've got mine on windows 10 latest edition and on window 7 and xp i have loads of different diagnostics stuff for Citroen and Peugeot and vag cars and some only work correctly on early laptops, but the wow wurth snooper works on windows 10 i've cloned the interface files so can share the same plug in tool as such, that all said its better have a laptop with no internet and anti virus on it,, other wise the files get thieved by anti virus and then i have to go back through the install again when it does it,,
that snooper is really good its got loads of data pages with sensor resistances and loads of stuff below is a few random pages of screen shots for it,
