Desperate help please on Valvetronic on my 2008 R56 Cooper. My Valvetronic motor is dead despite everything - Can anyone tell me how it operates eg it only has 2 wires - so what volts I should be able to measure on the grey and white wires going into it? Otherwise I will have to scrap the car.

My 2008 R56 Cooper went in to limp-home mode and the garage diagnosed failure with the Valvetronic not working - garage blamed the ECU because the wiring back to the ECU is clean. I am getting fault codes 28b4 Valvetonic Motor sluggish movement, 2847 Valvetronic Servomotor, 286C Valvetronic Power Supply, 285F Valvetronc thermal overload. The garage has told me to scrap it. I sent the ECU to be professionally tested and no problems were found. I saw a comment from Pelican on similar codes and have replaced the Valvetronic motor and Eccentric shaft sensor but the Valvetronic motor is still dead. I am measuring 3.2v on the white wire and 0.41v on the grey wire. But the motor doesn't move.

By manually adjusting the Valvetronic, the engine starts and drives (although in limp home mode) . I cannot find any blown fuses. Are there any other sources of power to the Valvetronic? Please can anyone suggest how to get around this before I have to scrap the car? Huge thanks::

the clue is thermal over load to me ie the motor as short circuit to deck bit like touch battery terminal together, i would say off that fault code the motor has been the problem also would remove rocker cover and check the gear teeth have not been damaged or worn out so the motor is locked solid that would also give a dead short, i'm not sure of which fuse or relay runs the motor, a call with your reg number to bmw mini and ask them for a circuit and fuse and relay whereabouts i have a generic fuses and location will add at bottom of here if any help.

Engine Compartment Fusebox

The high current fuses FL1-FL5 are underneath (on the bottom) of the Engine Compartment Fuse panel. High current fuses FL6-FL12 are on the right.

Fuses F1-F10 are on the left but are indicated in Mini wiring diagrams as F01-F010

ADDED BIT THERE ARE LARGE FUSES UNDER THE UNDER BONNET FUSE BOX ON SOME MODELS

This is fantastic material Mike. I have booked the weekend off from the other half - somehow I have got to get the valvetronic started and I will go through your information carefully. I now have another issue to look at as well - a misfire on cylinder 3, code 2775. This car never gives up trying to beat me.

tell me about it i have a 1.6 cooper at moment that should of been simple head off and gasket and timing chain and 02 sensors,, and for my next job its another head as cam and vvt faulty somewhere in there gives random misfire and pop back through inlet manifold like a valve is sticking of vvt is not running right its very noisy as well sometimes they are just totally for the bin,, ie pull old engine out and replace it with a known good low mileage one if can find one, or what i do is rebuild them new bearings and rings etc,

2006 R56 mini constant fault code 285E

i bought 2006 R56 mini which had over heated and dropped 6 valve seat so i bought good secondhand head fitted all new bolts and gaskets timed up with correct timing kit. had problem when i first tried to start the car it would not run found found valvetronic motor was holding valves open slightly hence lack of compression and found out needed to reprogram vanos units and reset valvetronic actuator motor this has all been done to correct factory spec but fault code 285E will not clear. have checked actuator motor is working and removed feed plug from the ECU to actuator motor to make sure there is a feed to motor. with all the plugs connected i have manually wound the actuator motor back with 4mm allen key till the engine runs fine no rattling stops and starts ok but when engine is ticking over you can watch the allen key turning slowly back to set point and it starts the rattling sound i have replaced the eccentric shaft sensor but issue remains. any help will be great

2008 Mini Cooper Classic R56 - Valcetronic broke 3 times and I still have the issue with the new one. It is the shaft that broke the back cover and exit 2mm behend. After 3 or 4 start and run the car valvetronic broke without any raison. Replace adjustable cam timing because it was not toching stopper pin at zero, a diatance of 6mm was present between both! Anyone have the procedure to reset the valvetronic? Thanks
