Try the third brake light. The seal gets dislodged and water gets in.

Make sure the weather seal is properly fixed around the hatch opening as well.

Just bought a brilliant condition R53 and found it was slightly damp under the rear carpet - but no rust, put new seals on the rear lights, changed the high level brake light and then noticed the rear quarter chrome/rubber moulding on the rear near side window(not the rear screen) had come away slightly from the glass. Having researched the clips arrangement I just gently pushed it back in until it stopped clicking and all seems good. Just in case it helps anyone else as I hadn't found this cause in my extensive browsing of boot leak issues!
