What is the best rpm for shift light?

2387 Views 29 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Back2DTM
I am installing a shift light in my MCS and need to know what is the best rpm for a gear change to get the most of the cars performance. I am adding more bhp and torque to it in the spring, therefore I wonder...
What is best with 170 bhp?
What is best with 210 bhp?

I always thought it was just below max revs before Redline -around 6600 - 7000 rpm
Thanks :) I don't drive mine in the winter so I don't remember what works best, I also just got a B&M short shift so I cant wait for the spring to come
nice!
i think i will never get a shift light for my MINI unless it has like 300hp. the full exhaust system is loud enough to remind me to shift ... hahaha
i am scard of short shift kit after I missed shift and blew my m3 engine w/ a UUC SSK and m3's "easy money shift gear box"
Even e46 m3 GTR doesnt have s SSK, i guess i don't need it too :D
dude, what are you doing??????

don't become a ricer with a stupid shift light. This is a mini forum about performance parts and tuning, not ricers boys and their extra weight lightbulbs. Do what you want to your car, but dont turn this forum into a ricer one. Unless you are a serious track racer, there is no need for a shift light unless you just want to add some weight  now think to yourself how much the contraption costed you and then say to yourself "shift light." now think, was it really worth it? if your spending a couple hundred, get a reduction pulley, not a light that adds weight. No offence man, but keep your mini cool, dont be a ricer.
we don't know what shift light he has, tho! hold ur flame :D
they do have some neat and small shift light out there. if u can't
add a shift light that weights only as much as a lighter, u better
dont eat before driving ur MINI :D
just playing.
yah, im sorry about the flaming :(

i got a little worked up there, but yah, i just cant stand ricers and the first thing they do besides a crappy exhaust is a mosterous shift light(i've seen some on automatics:p). so yah, but i personally think that you should do something else with your money. It is your car though so if you get one, make it a decent size and not crazy. :p

i totally understand you, man. I live in LA and ricers everywhere. i am sure in other countrys have way less ricers, so their mod ideas are not limited by the whole ricer thing that we have here. that shift light i talked about is same size as a quarter and very functional.
Don't worry guys :)
Yes I will be doing some serious track driving.
No the light is not big, I will be the only one that can spot it.
It's a shift light, not a mag lite, guess I will have to get some more bhp to compensate for it ;) (just kidding)
It is a matter of opinion but I see this as a good ad on as I will have 210+ bhp and 350 newton in my MCS on the track.
Even in little Norway we do have ricers that have seen "the fast and the furious" one time to many, but as I live in the neighbourhood of Petter Solberg most people are more serious about their way with cars.
There's more info on my ride here http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthread.php?t=86176
Thank's for your imput, I apprechiate it.
sweet ride. check out mine ;)
The best RPM for shift changes is...

... based on many factors.

Some of these are: road conditions (surface), traffic, weather, etc...

IMHO, you don't really need a shift light... because the best judge of when to shift is you, the driver. You should use your "noodle" and driving skills to decide on the shift points.

On the other hand, if you are utilizing the light for the track, and absolutely believe that you need one, who am I to try and dissuade you ?

Max RPM (rev limit) would definitely not be the correct input for all shift points though.

Thats very nice :D Those rims look great! What front lip do you have? I want one :)
thanks man :)
they are Hamann front lip and hamann rear diffuser.
In answer to the question, assuming trying to achieve max straight line acceleration,(and are not spinning wheels) ,I would ' want ' to change gear at say 6600rpm,therefore to allow for reaction time delay, I would set the light to around 6300rpm.
Regards Roland Gt Tuning.
BTW I dont think a shift light is such a bad thing, and is very useful for track days. Beats 'Max Power Magazine' flashing led's and flourescent tubes underneath etc.

Thanks for the input, I totally agree...nice website :)

put the front lip in the bottom of your wish list if you are planning to track your mini often.
in my experience, watching that expensive piece of fiber glass getting beat up on the track made me lose some sleep at night.
I know what you mean, had the same problem with my previous car. I was thinking about a home made "snap on" system that makes it possible to remove it when driving on track.

roland just wondering why u say 6.6krpm??

i've heard of lots of people moving the rev limiter on the S, I assumed that was becuase the power didn't start to drop off until the rev limiter? if that was the case surely the best place to change would be a few hundred rpm before the limiter??

:)
SPI in the USA...

...sells a decent looking shift light for around $80 that simply plugs into your lighter socket. It is said to correctly measure electronic pulses at that point in the electrical system. SPI are the ones with the Twincharged Mini conversions...

Rather than "snap on" it is just "plug in". :)
