Been looking into spark plugs for my Mini Cooper S and thought it would be of value to document what I have found out. If you know more or have something to add please feel free to do so. Maybe this thread could become a FAQ ?
For Standard MCS
The standard plugs in a MCS are NGK BKR6EQUP these are “6” series plugs and will be replaced as part of TLC. It is not clear how often the plugs are checked / changed. Some people choose to upgrade the standard plug for the NGK Iridium range NGK BKR6EIX. I will let others explain the advantage of Iridium plugs over standard.
For Modified MCS including JCW
With a JCW conversion the standard plugs are replaced by NGK BKR7EQUP these are “7” series plugs and are described as being one heat range colder than the standard plugs. {Others please can explain why this is important.} These plugs are only available from the dealer network or direct from JCW. Approx £18 per plug !
For non JCW cars running with a 15% reduced pulley it is recommend that the standard plugs are replaced with a colder range plug. Note some conversion companies do this as part of the upgrade / others do not. At this point there is a choice to replace with the JCW plugs NGK BKR7EQUP or use Iridium version NGK BKR7EIX which are about £10 per plug and are quite easy to get hold of.
I know that there are other choices than NGK however I do not have the correct part numbers / advantages / disadvantages again anyone else have more info ?
