How To Fix Seat Tilt/Slide Mechanism

Both Front seats on my daughters Mini faulty tilt/sliding mechanisms - the seat back would tilt forward but I needed to pull the lever under the seat to get the seat to slide forward.

I didn't care for purchasing new parts for both seats so had a go at repairing them myself. I did one seat a while back and so far its working fine :)

The tilt/slide mechanism works by a cable thats attached to the seat back, when the seat back is tilted forward the cable pulls on the mechanism under the seat base and releases it, allowing the base to slide.

On both seats the cables had snapped.

Remove the cable shroud from the holder by levering out with a screwdriver

Next lever out the other end from the seat base

Cut the end off the old cable where it attaches to the mechanism

I used a length of new cable I had but a replacement bike brake cable would do the same job, this shows the replacement cable complete with nipple on the end

Feed the new cable through the hole in the metal bracket on the seat base and up through the mechanism

Next a small crimp needs to be fitted that locates in the plastic housing, I used electrical connectors as shown with the smaller blue one cut down and crimped onto the cable

Push the crimp into the housing then feed the new cable into the outer plastic cable shroud and clip the shroud in place onto the seat base and seat back.

Next pull the cable taught, fit the bigger crimps but keep the plastic outer on so the crimps retain there shape, loop around the lug on the seat back bracket and crimp in place.

Ideally I would prefer to use a stronger method to crimp the cables in place but the ones I have used are working well so far. In the photos the seat base cushion was removed (it needed to be cleaned lol) but the repair can be done with the cushion still fitted.

Hope this helps anyone wanting to repair their seats :)

@Wendell I wouldn't be surprised if the mechanism is not different on a 2016 car.
In my exprience even most independant garages would probably get whatever replacement parts are avialable from mini or other suppliers, rather than doing this kind of 'roll your own' money saving fix. But that might still save you a chunk of money over main dealer prices. It is always best if you know a good independent you can trust to do things right (or have a good recommendation) rather than just the cheapest garage round the corner ( there is certainly some truth in the saying "If you think it's expensive to hire a professional - wait until you hire an amateur").

@CooperPT Good pictures are in this powerpoint presentation as a youtube video:

I think the creator must have seen the original pics in this thread. I used it to fix the drivers seat and now a year later need to do the same for the passenger side.
For clamping the end of the cable I use some old bike parts a bike brake cable straddle triangle which you could probably pick up fairly cheaply on ebay similar marketplaces. e.g.
https://www.amazon.com/Tektro-Alloy...UX4GG/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=cable+carrier+triangle&qid=1583662262&sr=8-1
This time I'll be using the hacked off end of an old cantilevel brake level (the part with the cable clamp on)
It looks very unprofessional but does the job well and will not be seen once in place.

I also found it easier to get to after :
1. disconnect the battery to prevent any seat airbag accidental discharge,
2. unclip the 2 connectors under the seat,
3. Undo the bolts holding the seat to the floor,
4. take the seat out and do the work.

Mine is a 2002 R53 Cooper S (had since new and is now a great second car but starting to show its age a little)

Ok Im reviving a super old thread but I found a different solution from what people have possibly due to my mini being a 2014.

At the bottom right side of the passenger seat there is a gear looking thingy with its hooked de-attached. I was able to pry it back into place by pushing the hook back up. This was all done without removing the seat, only had to remove the back seat cover but that was easy as mine had zippers.

Posting the pictures below for future generations. Hopefully they arent lost
