How to get a bit more bass out of R56 Boost Stereo?

Hi all,

my girlfriend just got an 07 MCS which has a Boost stereo system.
The stereo barely produces any bass even with the bass turned right up!

I hear that there is a loom available to make this a bit better but it messes around with the balance or fade of the set up.

Does anyone here use this loom?
Is it any good?

Is there an alternative way of doing this without changing the head unit or the speakers?

Any help would be greatly received :)

Thanks

Morallye I think in your '07 MCS BOOST the small front speakers get a bass-rich signal and the big rear speakers are fed a treble-rich channel from when the car leaves the factory. An awful thin, tinny sound from day 1...

It's simple to swap channels and get a much better bass sound. Mikey at NewMINIStuff can sell you a lead that bridges two connecting blocks in the plastic behind the passenger footwell to do this. I think there are instructions on his website. Or, the NAM site gives you a complex wire-swapping menu for free.

Mikey can add extra wires to this channel swap lead to enable you to include small 4ohm tweeters in replacements of the grey/anthracite/cream A-pillar plastics. I'd recommend this enhancement, too.

The 'channel swap' extends, enriches the bass and thickens up the mid-range and the A-pillar tweeters extend the treble and raise the sound stage. I feel IMO it builds on what you've got and extends it to produce a really acceptable sound. I've found that the OEM speakers are good enough to be made to sound very much better and I'm not convinced that buying 'better' speakers are as cost effective, though they might improve upon the sound in a small way.

I did this with my '09 R56 MCS and took it into my current '12 MCS and would highly recommend it! A good d-I-y enrichment and certainly excellent v-f-m (again IMO)

If you pop over to North American motoring (US mini site, very good too) there's a DIY thread on the channel swap with colour coded diagrams!! It's a bit fiddly but took me about 20 mins and makes a huge difference. Your front/rear fade is reversed of course, and for some reason it switches your left/right round too but really, who cares ) it sounds waaaaayyyy better too. About 1million other people think so too )

If you hunt around on here and NAM you'll also find a stack of info on why the cars sound so bad in stock. There's also detailed explanations about why if you do decide to speaker upgrade, you have to choose carefully because of the mini's 'unique' electrical set up. If you do go balls out for an upgrade, the new mini stuff packages look pretty good and good value.
