Steering Wheel Wobble

Help!

Over the past year, my steering wheel has developed a wobble.

It tends not to happen at 35 mph, or 70 mph where the steering wheel does not wobble.
It is worst at 40 mph where there is about 1cm of movement left and 1cm right.

It can't be:

The wheel bearings
Brakes
Tracking
Wheel spacers

...as these have all been replaced.

It could be a mis weighted wheel perhaps, or maybe a warped wheel in some way.

The car did have a spin in to a field last summer so i was wondering if it is a wobble being felt in the wheels but coming from the drive shaft, maybe from a lateral shunt or something?

Dont think it would be from anything static like the suspension as the wobble seems to have a harmonic property about it in that it comes and goes at different speeds.

There is also a slight loose feeling in the steering as though there is some play in a bush or fixing somewhere.

I've asked a couple of mechanics that have worked on my car in the past and all that has been suggested is a possible loose drive shaft.

Does anybody have any idea on what this could be, or even better, how best to investigate it? I'm not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, but i do grasp anything that is explained to me and pick things up quickly, so if any super mechanic has any ideas then i am all ears !!!

My final attempt would have to be to take it to BMW, but watch all the mods guys, no misadjusting or anything

Please help!

:(

Cheers,
K.

Hi Karl, I said get the wheels balanced in answer to an email you sent a while ago. I assumed you had done it. -Total price about ÂŁ10:eek: If the wheels have runout (buckle) laterally or vertically you will see it when on the machine. Also egg shape or flat spots in the tyre will be evident at the same time. Out of balance occurs (at its worst) at 40 ,80 and 160mph ,(harmonics)

Hi Karl,Watch the guy when he does it,and ask him (a) if you/he can eyeball it for runout in both planes and (b) make sure the machine reads zero -zero after balancing. Also the hood that swings down over the wheel during balancing shouldnt shake & judder when the balancing is right. Best Regards Roland GTT:smile:

Wheels checked

Roland,

The wheels have now been checked, and found to be true on both planes, which is good. I saw the testing myself and saw it run true.:)

The weights were off slighty so i had them re done on both wheels.:)

Interestingly, on one wheel the toyo tr1 had a wobble slightly

The Goodyear GSD3's are going on in Jan ;)

(also had the usual "what car, how much, how fast, what you had done to it" from other customers and the staff there - we spent as much time doing the wheels as we did discussing the car - Nice!)

Cheers,
K.

Wheel weights...If you have the Dares...mine had a wobble at 60-70 ish as the hub centring rings got worn and so they didn't locate the rim as tight to the hub as i would have liked and so the wobble got progressivly worse.

Wobble continues

Well, the problem still persists.

It could be the tyres perhaps?

Or could it be play i drive shaft bearings resulting in a wobble or looseness. I always thought the steering felt a little loose, and not because of the wheels, tyres, suspension etc.

time for BMW visit?

Cheers,
K.

I had a similar problem a while back... It wobbled when I was going at 70 kmh (43.5 mph).
After checking the balance and alignment, my problem was due to my right front wheel being slightly curbed (sorry but Im not sure if thats how its said!), probably thanks to the excellent road conditions we have in Mexico!!
Hope this helps...
