Hey guys n' gals,

Just thought I should share the possibility of updating the software of your MINI built-in sat nav. The newest software (available on h**p://@@@.x5world.com/navigation-system/44556-v31-has-been-released-now-available.html (change asterisks to Ts and @ to Ws!) allows you to enable perspective mode (which is similar to the new BMWs mode) and must have better/improved functions and bug fixes etc! I suggest you read the forum carefully to make sure you get the right version for your car (there are mark 3 and mark 4 computers around; mark 4 is on the later cars). For me it was very easy. Once you have updated your MINI (if you have mark 4 computer), in order to enable perspective mode you have to get into 'set' and then quickly hold down the menu button for about 10 seconds. This takes you to a 'hidden' menu. You then need to scroll down to the next screen, click on perspective and click on it so it changes to on. Then go to navigation, enter a destination, and go into map direction and change that to 'perspective' and voila!

If you have problems/questions please sign up to the X5 World forum and post them there as I don't know that much about the updates!

Actually there are a lot of posts on this but thanks for the reminder. ;) The MK3 and MK4 both use the same update CD but the MK3 is no longer being updated with firmware (stopped at V26 I think). The V31 software has been running fine on mine and is very stable. Perspective mode has been out for about 2 years now. Questions can be posted here as I have a solid understanding of the unit.

Also, in a few weeks or so I will be hosting the updates on my site. ;)

I have yet to hear of the V32 release to be honest. V31 unlocked the DVD to read dual layer disks on the MK4. This is needed if you are ordering the latest disk from BMW/NAVTEQ

On the new MINI yes, they are using the professional system that BMW has rather than the high system used on the 02-06 MINI.

Hi,

Thanks to all for the info here. I successfully updated the nav software last night. I found the hidden menu and turned perspective mode on but I can't see any difference and still get a birds eye view of the map.
Am I missing something?

We also bought the car used and don't seem to have any guide for the Nav system. Is there one online perhaps? I did search but didn't come up with anything.

Thx for any help.

PS.
I made a backup copy of our Europe High DVD disc, tested working and so it is possible.

Ahh, I found out why. Didn't do the last step here.

To do this, enter the settings menu (press menu then click on set). Once inside this menu, hold down the menu button for about 8 seconds or until you notice the screen change to service mode. Scroll down to perspective mode and enable it. Now exit service mode by pressing menu, then select GPS navigation. Press the knob in, scroll to pointer direction and select perspective.

Still hoping on some kind of user guide though if anyone knows of one. Mk4 system on a 53MCS.

Thx

Hi all,

My sat nav hasn't worked for ages, the map starts up for a few seconds and it just crashes and spits the cd out so i guess it needs updating and iv'e finally got round to wanting to fix it :)

Typically not a firmware issues... Is your map CD an original or a copy? If it is a copy, it is possible that it is what is causing the problem. You might try burning a new copy or buy an updated map disk.

As for your firmware, please tell me what you have in the upper right corner of the setup screen. I will tell you if there is an update available for you.

firmware - SW 3-1/63

Its a real cd, got it with the car. About a year ago i did try updating from 1 off ebay but it didnt work
and so carried on using my current cd....... has this confused it?

Do you suggest burning an iso disc from x5? (ive already download the file suggested.) or is this just firmware?

or shall i just buy a new cd? if so which disk do you suggest i buy? there are loads out there "claiming" they work
will this 1 work? -

Dan, what you downloaded is firmware not maps and you are already up to date.

Link was no good but be careful you are not getting a copy. ;) Ebay tends to let folks sell pirated copies.

If it is spitting out the original CD, there may be a problem with the unit. You might try making a copy of the original and using it. If it still does the same thing then the unit probably has an issue.

Cheapest way would be to make a copy of the CD that you have and try it. If it works then the CD you have must have some bad spots on it. Generally a computer CDRom will read a disk that the unit can't. The units are just a bit sensitive.

If that doesn't work there might be a problem with the unit. If that is the case, you could contemplate an upgrade to an MK4.

Hi all, still very new to all this, and are not that good with computers, but despite this I am trying to improve my sat nav, I have tied to deduce wether I have a Mk 3 or 4, and on the unit under the seat it has DVD logo on it , am I right in thinking this is a Mk 4???? as I have been reading the other thread on installing road cameras as well, hopfully I can crack it in the end, ever hopefull FF

ive got a mk3 cd sat nav, i want a upgrade cos its the same one as what came with the car in 2002.
All this talk of downloading from the internet confuses me, which file do i need to upgrade to the latest version and with a firmware upgrade? im not very good with computers so do i just download it from some a certain link? (which is?), burn that file onto a blank disk and put that disk in my sat nav and it will go all the rest?

do i need any special programs to put convert the files so its read by the sat nav or can i just burn it on like im putting a song on a cd?

First, we need to know what version you have installed already. On the Nav go to the setup screen and post the series of numbers in the upper right. Once we figure out what you have installed we can recommend what firmware version to download.

As for burning the file. It is not like burning an MP3 to a CD. The file that you are downloading is like a zip file of all the files. This is called an ISO file. It is an image of the original CD compiled into one. There are several applications (free) that you can use to burn them. Some people also use Nero to create these ISO but the program uses a bit different format.
